2000 Guestbook Entries. The first half of the year is unfortunately missing.

The album TIME AFTER TIME was released in the autumn of 2000. On December 20, 2000, NPR “Morning Edition” broadcast a story about Eva that zoomed all her music to the top of the Amazon charts, and I think the Guestbook crashed from the amount of traffic. Also in late 2000, BBC Radio 2 broadcast an hour-long radio documentary about her, and Top of the Pops 2 played the video of Eva singing “Over the Rainbow” at the end of their program. I wish I had all the Guestbook entries from that exciting time period.

I heard Dark End of the Street last year on Radio 2, which hooked me.

When they then played Wonderful World I bought the single and found your

website when searching for more information. I regularly come back to

the site. My wife bought me Live at Blues Alley and Eva By Heart for

Xmas and I then bought The Other Side. I’m not easily moved but Eva

manages it regularly. Definitely the best female singer ever!! Her band

don’t often get a mention, which is a shame as they also do a

magnificent job in the background. Thanks to your website I was also

able to place an advance order for Time After Time, which includes some

more gems. I would be really interested to obtain Eva’s music (in tab

format preferably)- I love the guitar work. Has anyone transcribed her

For me it is too little too late. The live album remains my favourite

even though I realise from reading sleeve notes that Eva only allowed

its release on the basis that she was allowed to record a studio based

follow up.

The live format captures the “soul” behind the voice and like all good

jazz and blues musicians this format hits home the best.

Like Jeff Buckley Eva has been taken from us too soon, I never got to

witness either live but can live and enjoy their music. If only Eva

could have been filmed live she could have reached out to the hearts of

so many more people, an equivalent release to Jeff Buckley’s Live in

Chicago would have been a cherished thing.

As her loss is felt even by those who have only the CD’s to connect, her

loss to those who knew her must be so over powering my thoughts are with

you all.

until January 2000 did I remember her name; I had a gift certificate for

Amazon.com and was looking for the best way to spend it….

I went shopping last week with my daughter and as we checked out the

music as usual I look under C and could not believe my luck in seeing

one copy of Time After Time I had ordered all the others through the

local music and book shop

but it was great to be able to buy straight up. I can only say the same

thing again as in the past but Eva’s voice has so much power. I some

times wonder if other artists have or could affect me the same way as

she does I sometimes feel that same sense of soul when listening to

Billie Holiday I know it’s sooo different but it touches me a little as

Eva does. It’s great to see so many people have such great taste . A day

cannot go by without playing one if not all of her CDs . The best thing

I ever did was to stop the car and find out who was singing on the radio

about 3 years ago write her name down and start looking for her recordings.

Last year I was cruising north on Alberta Highway 56. I was listening to

my usual station, the finest public radio on the planet, CKUA FM. Fields

of Gold was introduced and set up by the announcer. I almost drove the

van into the ditch. Such a pure voice. A voice like none I’d ever heard.

On my next trip to Edmonton I found Songbird. At home I was, once again,

The first time I heard her voice I wept, and have done ever since. Never

before have I heard a voice of such beauty, and as a singer and voice

teacher myself I have been deeply touched and inspired by her sound. She

died tragically young but her serenity, spirituality, and emotion

carries through so strongly in her voice, I’m just relieved she was

recorded for people like me to be so personally affected by her. I hope

I was first intrigued by the labels stuck on the Eva Cassidy CD’s in my

local record store – “Greatest voice” and so on. So I checked out the

details of Eva’s career on the Web, and was saddened to read about her

early death. I bought “Live at Blues Alley” just to see what I thought –

and bought the rest of the CD’s on the following day. She is a truly

magnificent singer – and I love her delicate touch on the acoustic

I am 66 years old and felt like an absolute fool when a lady friend of

mine played Eva for me. I cried. I actually cried. Not only for the

Heavenly voice but for the terrible loss I felt that She is no longer

among us mortals. Perhaps She never was.

I have just purchased Time After Time and do not like it as much as the

others, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t better than anything I have ever

heard EXCEPT Her other albums.

Billy Holiday, Etta James, Marva Wright–all magnificent and Eva is

My husband Tony and I met Eva when she was first starting to sing in

public- she had only recorded in the studio. She was recording songs for

a friend of hers, Dave Christopher (hi Dave if you read this!)for a band

called “method actor”. She needed some singers to sing back up for her

live and we did. The first time we rehearsed she was so shy she sang in

the other room and the band and us played in the other. The first time

we played live at a showcase in D.C. she made us stand up front next to

her because she was so afraid of singing before an audience. We couldn’t

believe it – because she was and is still the best singer we have ever

heard. I always thought I was a pretty good singer until she opened her

mouth and I was immediately humbled. She sang all the way up from her

toes and listening to her sing still makes me cry. We even thought about

naming our youngest daughter after her but thought it would be too much

pressure on our daughter to live up to the Eva sound (she’s 15

months-and what if she can’t sing at all?) Anyway – living in Nashville –

we meet quite a few up and coming singers and always play Eva’s music

for them, mostly as something for them to aspire to. Every time I hear

“natural woman” I think of her because she used to sing it with us in

our band, and we recorded the backgrounds to it with her one day in the

studio. She was one of the sweetest, most humble people I’ve ever known.

I guess God needed a “kick-butt” angel in the choir and the rest of us

have to live with her CDs now. . . looking forward to “no boundaries” . . .

First encountered Eva’s music at my Mums house. Usually she’s got some

sort of harmless but ultimately tripey dirge on in the background (well,

that’s what all children think about their mum’s music, isn’t it!!) but

as we were all chatting over dinner I kept hearing this lovely voice in

the background, and I was like, what IS this? And Mum (Radio 2 listener)

outlined a bit about Eva – like a lot of people I was surprised to find

that she was white, and so sad to hear that she was dead. Anyway, by the

time I’d pinched Songbird off my mum and played that about a million

times, and recorded it to play in my car, and THEN worried that the tape

might mangle up, I thought I might as well cut my loses and get my own

copy! So that’s where I am now. I have to listen to it by myself,

because as soon as ‘I Know You by Heart’ comes on, I am reduced to a

snivelling heap! ‘Songbird’ is such a gentle, serene song isn’t it?

Would really like it played at my wedding (tho’ I don’t intend to get

married until I’m about 40, so that’s about a 16yr wait. Maybe someone

else should play it at theirs first!) And ‘…Golden Thread’ makes me

wish I could sing soooooo much! When she hits those high notes, she just

lifts you up with her. I’d defy anyone, whatever their musical tastes,

to tell me she hasn’t got an exquisite voice. Then you find out what a

lovely person she was, and it’s just the icing on the cake!

Anyway, thanks Mum for introducing me to Eva, and thanks Eva for, err,

helping me use up a lot of tissues. What a talent.

PS: has Sting ever commented on Eva’s cover of Fields of Gold? Does he

like it better that his own version?!?

My husband Bruce Davidson was mentioned on this CD, he was one of the

Johns Hopkins patients who also had melanoma. Bruce passed away 3 1/2

years ago. I always think of Bruce when I hear Eva’s song I know you by

heart. It has a special place in my heart just as her family has a

special place in my heart. Margaret was Bruce’s friend and Eva’s parents

were a great support to me after Bruce passed. I was pregnant with twin

boys at the time of Bruce’s death and Mr. and Mrs. Cassidy always checked

on me. It’s good to know that Eva’s music and presence will always be

felt. I heard Eva’s music one day in a little store here in Seattle and

had to share her story with them. It’s good to know that she has

impacted so many people with her beautiful music.

Well, I thought I was the only one that cried at Eva Cassidy

albums…. .obviously not, I’ve been trying to buy Songbird for ages but

no-one seemed to stock it, then just when I had almost forgotten about

her I came across a stall at the Village Pump 2000 festival and they had

4 of her albums, no-one that I was with had heard of her but I’ll

introduce them one by one!!!!.

What can I say6 about her voice that hasn’t been said already, it makes

shivers run down my spine, it makes me sad that and glad that I never

knew her, sad for the obvious reasons and glad cause if I had known her

I would have fallen (even more) in love with her and I wouldn’t have

I was given Time After Time by my daughter last month as a birthday gift,

although I know that my wife had suggested it as I had said that I had

been impressed with the little that I had heard of Eva on the radio. I

responded to this web page about a month ago and said that I liked

Kathy’s Song best which I have played on my guitar since the 60’s when

it was released on Paul Simon’s first album. HOWEVER since then I have

bought more of Eva’s work and I have to say that I have never heard such

an interpretation of Waly Waly as the one that Eva sings on Eva by

Heart. I can only suggest that you all listen again – pour a long glass

of deep red wine, turn down the lights, turn up the volume and close

your eyes: this is too emotional an interpretation to be described in

words, it has to be appreciated at its rawest edge

I had the pleasure of knowing Eva in high school in Glen Dale, Maryland

and had the greater pleasure of singing with her in a small choral

group. Often one doesn’t recognize great talent amongst 7 other singers

but everyone recognized Eva’s capacity for humility and compassion. As a

very quiet person she tried to blend in. She did not seek center stage

and shied away from requests to do solos. Even though she was an

excellent choral member, every so often the power and beauty of her

voice would overshadow everyone else in the room. One particular moment

stands out in my mind when our director was frustrated in trying to get a

certain passion and depth of sound from us and, being typical teenagers,

we were unwilling to put forth the effort. During the next pass through,

however, one voice rose above all others, strong, passionate, and with a

pristine clarity I’d never heard before in that room. To everyone’s

surprise, perhaps even to herself, it was Eva. She immediately turned

red, looked to the floor, and timidly offered “I guess I took in a large

breath and it wanted out”. Our performance of that song gained new fever

and became one of our best. She had shown us just how good it could be.

I guess few of us really understood the depth of her talent and her

ability to communicate through her singular voice. Even as a teenage

person, she was as beautiful and sensitive as her voice. Personally I am

blessed to have known her, together we are all fortunate to have these

remembrances of her talent and sensitivity.

I too am a singer & a friend of mine from England told me about an Eva

Cassidy. He said I must hear her. Well he lent me his Songbird CD and I

was forever changed. Just from listening to her CD I know that she was a

special, humble, beautiful & extremely talented person. I would have

loved to not only meet her but perhaps sing a duet with her someday. Her

voice and music has captured my heart and it’s very rare that I am moved

this much. She truly was an angel. I read that she was very close to

being a star but in my opinion she already was since the day she was

born. She is a guiding star and light. The people that knew her were

blessed and I am so fortunate to have been introduced to her music. I

honestly believe that she had one of the greatest voices I have ever

heard in my entire existence (even though I’m only 21). I fall asleep to

the serene sounds of Eva and wake up to her Wade in the Water so that I

may start my day. What relation do you have to Eva? Are you a fan, a

friend, relative? Has there ever been a tribute concert to her life and

her music, because if not I think one should be arranged either by her

family, friends or fellow musicians because I don’t think her music or

memory should ever die. We must keep her alive. She is one of music’s

best kept secrets. If there ever would be a tribute concert in her name

I would be so honoured to sing at least one of her songs. She has

inspired me and I am forever touched by her angelic voice. I feel

blessed to have her CD.

These days it is very hard to find a unique and special voice like hers.

My heart goes out to her family & friends because they lost such a

beautiful person so early. But what she left behind is just as beautiful.

Anyway I am truly touched and inspired but such beauty.

Her spirit will live on forever in my heart.

Now that I have discovered Eva Cassidy I can’t imagine what my life was

like before her. Each time I listen to her voice it touches my heart and

A mate of mine heard the radio 2 hour and raved to me about Eva’s voice.

I’d forgotten all about this until last week when visiting the

Lighthorseman pub in York. The barman was playing his own CD over the

pub’s stereo while Real Madrid -v- AC Milan were on the big screen. I

was so taken by the girl’s voice that I had to ask the barman who the

singer was and it was only then that I remembered my mate’s comments.

Anyway, when I got home, the first visit I made was to my local Virgin

(the shop – not the lady) and got Time After Time. Great sounds and I

feel the rest of her catalogue coming….

I first heard Eva about a year ago on Radio Two, her voice haunted me,

and I just had to buy her album Songbird. When I got home with the CD, I

played it and read the inner cover. Tears ran down my face as I read

about her tragic illness. I could not believe that Eva had died with the

identical pain and symptoms which took my brother’s life in 1994,age 39.

Songbird was the first Eva Cassidy I had ever heard when it

was played on Radio 2 here in England. I just melted into that song and

had to hear more. I now own the Songbird CD

and have yet to hear the other ones. The CD has been circulated amongst

my friends and colleagues and everyone is amazed that we haven’t heard of

her before. I have recently attended a funeral of a school friend who

died of cancer aged just 31. I play Eva and think of her, I think of her

Our family was introduced to Eva by a client of my husbands’

and we were hooked immediately. Can anyone really sing like that? My

daughter (age 17) has a similar singing style and now Eva is her role

model. Can’t tell you how disappointed we were to find out she passed

It is unfair to have to choose one album and one track. As a Blues fan I

must select a blues track. I was searching the ABC Shops in our land

Down under for some Blues & Jazz material, and stumbled across “The Other

Side”. That was 2 months ago in late May 2000. Since then 4 of Eve’s

CD’s have come home to a place of Honour at the top of my CD shelves.

[there are over 400, so to be at the top should tell you my feelings

about Eva’s music. Her CD’s are played day and night, and every friend

who comes over, hears it and hurriedly goes out to buy a copy for

themselves. What a fabulous legacy to leave behind so that we may be

privileged to hear this Artist. I am now looking for “Eva From The

Heart” to complete the present collection. I say thank you so much for

providing this site so that we can share some of the magic that is Eva

Cassidy. I have no doubt that she rests well in the highest place of all.

I am originally from the D.C. area, and was fortunate to have worked

with Eva, Live and in the studio. From the first day I meet her at Black

Pond Studios, I knew she was one of a kind. She still is.

Method Actor was the band at that time. My good friend David brought me

in to record drum tracks for this project, I was a hired gun, but ended

up staying in the band. What an incredible, god given voice!! Beautiful,

yet very shy lady, the most humble person I have ever meet. We ended up

recording 2 albums of material. We also played out a few times. Her

voice was so powerful and strong. I remember her walking on stage,

herself and guitar, and the room falling completely silent as she started

singing. She could do that. Only Eva. I’m rambling… sorry… I do that

when I talk about her…. okay, one more thing that is very dear to my

heart…a birthday present….she sat down with her guitar and sang me

“Over the Rainbow”…just for me…I cry now every time I listen to that

song. Sorry Miss Garland, Eva’s got you beat!!

Find everything…every album, compact disc, every article, every

picture…everything, and pass them down to each generation of ALL our

families…We owe it to them…We owe it to her. She HAD No

Boundaries… She still doesn’t!!

I hope you are interested in this little story. It is cold and dark in

Canberra at this time of year (July) and I am in my car outside the

supermarket waiting for my wife Lynne to do some quick shopping. To fill

in time I turn on the car radio, and it is a chance in a million that I

am listening at all really. The program is an interview/music session:

they speak with someone about their field of work at some length, and

this is interspersed with some pieces of music that the interviewee

chooses. The person being interviewed is an authority on environmental

problems in Australia. I listen. Then they play a track without any

pre-announcement. It is Fields of Gold and of course it is Eva Cassidy

and in the back-announce the radio interviewer says that that was just

beautiful (and it is clear that she means it), and that the artist was

completely unknown to her until that time. To me it doesn’t seem so cold

and dark anymore, either. Back home I am on the Web to find out more. I

have read that this happens around the world; someone plays a track and

so it goes on. Thanks for your site; you tell the story beautifully. And

here in Australia, after that single track, Eva Cassidy has one more fan

and probably a lot many more.

About four weeks ago I heard this singer on Radio 2 and the announcer

said “Eva Cassidy”….I wrote the name down on the back of my hand

because I hadn’t heard such a voice before, I can’t even remember the song.

So on to the Amazon website and ordered Songbird…I wept all the way

through it….a week later I have Time After Time and what a track The

Letter is ( I think originally sung by the Boxtops but I maybe

wrong).its a real tour de force fantastic… Vie never heard anything

like it. I’m looking forward to my next Eva CD. It may sound silly but

I had never heard of her. Fields of barley was announced on the radio

and, about to turn it off, I was stopped in my tracks by the first

notes. Spellbound….that’s the nearest I can come to expressing my

state. Some time later I heard “Over the Rainbow” which I didn’t believe

could be rivaled. It wasn’t…. ..it was brought to a different plane.

Songbird is my first Eva CD. I am devastated that this gift to the earth

is no more. This is neither singing nor mere artistry. This voice goes

beyond anything I have ever heard. A singer myself I know that this is

not simply vocals….this is a spiritual expression by Eva. It emanates

I first heard her album in a large music store, I was searching for some

Diana Krall material when I noticed this most fantastic voice being

played in the background. I went over to the service desk, asked

what/who it was playing and found it was this unknown singer, Eva. I

bought the album there and then and just had to play it on my way home,

I couldn’t wait. I was totally captivated by her voice and interpretation

of music, some familiar but which she made sound fresh and somehow, all

of her own.

It was some months later that I had found Eva had died almost 3 years

ago. I now have all of her albums, but hope that more of her material

can be released (without compromising her own standards on quality.

Everyone I play the music to (often as background at diner parties etc)

remarks immediately on her voice…’who IS that?’ and many have gone out

and bought her music after hearing.

Your site is a fantastic source of information and gives an insight into

what Eva was like as person. It is obvious she is deeply missed by all

who met her.

I only heard about Eva last week when I was browsing in a book/record

store, and they had her album “Time After Time” on a listening station.

Her eyes haunted me, so I decided to listen to the CD to find out what

she was like. My God, after the very first song I was hooked. Her voice

is so clear, so beautiful – she just draws you in. I bought the album,

and also found “Eva By Heart” and bought that one too. I have listened

to “Eva By Heart” several times, but haven’t found the right place

(somewhere quiet, perhaps near the ocean) to listen to “Time After

Time”. I will send my love out to her, wherever she is, when I listen to

her. I am just so thankful that the big stores (Borders, Barnes & Noble)

are putting her music on their listening station, so that those of us

In Minneapolis the critic at the St Paul Pioneer Press wrote a lovely

There’s simply not a lot of need to write a great deal about Eva. If

you’ve heard her sing and you have a soul then already know all you

need. When Eva sings “Oh, do Lord, Oh do you remember me?” The answer

is simply that the Lord realized that without your voice it was an empty

Thank you for such a wonderful web site! I was introduced to the

Songbird CD by my sister. She got it from a friend who heard of Eva at a

conference for breast cancer survivors.

My sister told me that I would love the music and she was absolutely

right. I sing for myself, around the house, in the car, etc. and I adore

Eva’s voice and music. I am too shy to share my voice, but have been

given encouragement by reading about her life and love of song. I can

sing almost not for note along with her CD and I try to imagine how she

must have felt during recording. I grew up listening to my mother’s

beautiful voice and am trying to tap into the ability she passed to me.

Holy Moly! Heard “Time After Time” on KUNC radio and called the station

I found Eva’s music when visiting a Barnes and Noble store. I didn’t buy

the CD immediately but returned to listen to it again and found the CD’s

to be sold out. I went to another record store today and purchased Time

After Time and The Other Side. Then I read about Eva. I am sitting up

late tonight because I can’t get over the fact that she is gone. I do

some singing, myself. Many of my friends are Jazz Purists. I loved

finding Eva because she can do any type of music brilliantly. Also, I

was a folk singer in college–so it seems, I appreciate many categories

of music. I have many debates with my friends over categories of music

and which is the best. Eva can put this debate to rest because every

song she touched is moving-no matter the category. I am so very sad

I heard an Eva Cassidy CD, Time After Time for the very first time three

A new friend and musical collaborator introduced me to her music. “Wade

in the Water” was the first song I heard, and I was hooked. I accessed

the web site listed on the back cover of the CD, which linked me to

amazon.com, from which I ordered all of her recordings.

My hearing her voice 4 years after her death is quite bittersweet. Just

hearing that first song (Wade…) was stirring enough, but hearing that

her voice was silenced so early was heartbreaking. God bless her, and

God bless you all for keeping her memory alive. Rest assured, I will be

sharing her music with others, as my friend did for me. Eva’s voice is

one that should never be silent, and thanks to all of you, it never

I’ve just bought my first EC album. I know it’s a compilation but WHAT

an introduction to Eva’s beautiful voice. I shall certainly purchase the

other albums, in particular ‘Live at Blues Alley’ if I can get hold of

it in the UK. I am amazed that the US record industry failed to

recognize early on what a very special talent Eva had. It’s sad that

it’s taken until now, four years after her passing, for her music to

start to reach a wider audience. I wish I had seen one of her live

performances but her legacy is her beautiful (although small in number)

collection of albums. One thing I really want to say – she left the

world a better place.

I walked into a gift shop in downtown Plymouth yesterday and before I

got completely in the door I heard the most soulful and angelic voice

I’ve ever heard singing the old spiritual, Wade in the Water. I asked

the woman behind the counter who it was and she handed me the CD cover

of Songbird. As I read I was stuck by the beauty and tragedy of her life

and death. I am 36 years old, my passion is singing, and I’ve never been

so completely overcome with joy and sorrow listening to a singer in my

First of all thanks for the website its inspirational. I first heard

Eva’s voice about 2 years ago on BBC radio 2 on the breakfast show. The

song was “Over the Rainbow” my morning stopped, never before or since

have I heard such a perfect voice, the version of the song was so unique

that you forget the original. I had to order “Songbird” from one of the

larger music stores in Nottingham as it was not then available. how

Kathy’s Song was played on the radio here and I was hooked by its

subtlety and intensity. I needed to hear it again, so got Time after

Time. What is so astonishing about the songs is that there is no

difference in the directness of interpretation between the live and

studio recordings. Almost always studio recordings are too polished and

lose immediacy, which is why I always prefer live music – but here there

is no such difference. I love the intelligence and musicality of Eva’s

interpretations, the versatile arrangements, the beautifully executed

guitar accompaniments. All too familiar songs like Time After Time and

Ain’t No Sunshine acquire a new acuteness and she makes you really

listen to lyrics, draws you inside the songs. Knowing now that Eva died

so young and hearing here what she could do I wonder, had she lived, how

her musical talents would have developed, whether she would have

explored new directions, fusing styles maybe. I am grateful for the

precious gift of music that she left us, music so vibrantly and vitally

alive. I will absolutely get more of her CDs and secretly hope there’s

some undiscovered live performance tape somewhere that will someday also

find its way onto CD.

I was driving home from visiting my mother (she’s 83) in northern

Minnesota on a sunny summer afternoon. I had just ejected the tape I had

been listening to and the radio came on. It was tuned to public radio. I

caught the last verse of “Over the Rainbow”. I think I stopped breathing

until it was over…. the voice, the phrasing, the spirit of this song

was so lovely. You know how you’re just driving along, listening to the

sound of the car engine, the wind, whatever and not really listening to

anything? Then you hear this voice and your mind snaps to attention and

you say, “My God, who is that?? I must hear more.” I grabbed a pen from

the dash and wrote Eva Cassidy on the back of my hand so I wouldn’t

forget. When I got to the edge of the city I stopped at a Barnes &

Noble. The only CD they had of hers was Live at Blues Alley so I bought

it and ordered Songbird. The clerk said they usually sold out the minute

they got in a new shipment of her recordings. Amazing voice.

asked me to listen. After playing several more of her songs, I begged

him to tell me who owned this incredibly beautiful, angelically passionate

Well, better late than never, I suppose. I first heard Eva singing on

the local radio. I live in a small country town, so it’s unusual to hear

‘good’ music. The song was Fields of Gold. I waited 6 months before I

could get my first CD of her, simply because after I heard the song and

asked around, no one had heard of her. Then by chance, a newspaper

review in Brisbane (capital of Queensland) mentioned her recordings.

Thankfully, I was able to track down Time After Time & Songbird. Eva has

a voice that, while never ‘raw’, still has great ‘soul’. A real treasure

and clearly a great loss to family, friends, and the music world.

Reading through the messages I’m not sure I can add much as to why I

find Eva’s work so moving – I just think that the songs so beautifully

I’ve seen a couple of messages lately asking about ‘No Boundaries’. It

is available through www.Towerrecords.com as a special order item. I

bought it across the counter at Tower Records in downtown Washington,

D.C. a couple of weeks ago. Since it is Eva it is, of course, a good

album (can I use that term these days?). However, as these are older

recordings, my opinion is that whoever produced these sessions was more

interested in showing off the power of her voice rather than the

subleties you get on the later recordings. In a nutshell, it seems

‘shrill’ to me in places when compared to the other albums. But let me

stress that it is still worth having. In fact, I almost feel like a

traitor for saying it is less than perfection. After all, it is Eva. If

anyone else out there has heard the album I would love to know what you

think of it. Also, I was looking for No Boundaries in Borders Books and

Music. They didn’t have it but the clerk told me that Chuck Brown’s

Christmas record (with Eva on lead vocals on some tracks) is being

reissued this coming holiday season.

A few years back, a dear friend played the “Songbird” CD for me and I was

blown away by Eva’s voice. I immediately bought the CD and listened to

it hours on end. I felt that I had received such a gift! I wanted to

I discovered Eva by accident when looking through our station’s playlist

for something interesting to play on our new late Sunday World Music

Show. The album had been written off as uncommercial but the acoustic

nature attracted me. Played Ain’t No Sunshine and was hooked. Reading

the liner notes as the song played I was shocked to find it was

posthumous. What a wonderful talent. I wish I’d heard her earlier and

I have all her CDs – just bought No Boundaries two days ago

Oct.20 at Olssen’s Books in Old Town. While it is worth it alone just for

Eva’s glorious voice, I agree with a previous guestbook reviewers

assessment. What made Eva special was the way she could reach into your

emotions with the simplest of arrangements, minimal instrumentation, and

that pure voice, a voice so beautiful without any hint of

pretentiousness and no slickness whatsoever. Her choice of songs was

also very special – many very simple and noncommercial, rendered in the

most heartfelt manner. On No Boundaries she sounds like she would have

sounded if the recording industry had discovered her – still an

incredible talent but with her specialness diminished. The recording has

slick background instrumentation and most of the songs are nothing out

of the ordinary (excluding Natural Woman), made special only because of

her voice. It is unlike her other CDs but still good -maybe it will grow

on me more with repeat listening. I hope more unreleased material can be

found similar to the previous CDs – she’s just that good!

I heard Eva for the first time last month while I was downloading some

song off of Napster for a Jazz Improve class, I thought that it’d be fun

to hear what some free-lance artist were doing, to hear the difference

between the profession and unprofessional talent. I was quite surprised

to hear such an amazing purity, and controlled tone. I’m not saying

controlled meaning that it’s forced or ridged, but am instead trying to

imply that she used techniques that invokes passions in the listeners.

(Whether she was aware of it or not remains a mystery, likely she was

unaware) Anyway, what I really came to say, is that I’m using Eva voice

as a source of reference for stylistic appoarces to for my own singing.

I’m studying her the same way I would Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holliday ,

influential jazz vocalist. I think that Eva has created a link

Well I heard Eva’s cover of “Fields of Gold” on Dawson’s Creek, I

downloaded it right away on napster. I immediately fell in love with her

voice and found out more about her. I was so saddened to find out about

A month ago a friend introduced me to a radio station, KTAO out of New

Mexico. Last Sunday during the jazz program, a song came on that stopped

me in my tracks. I knew it was “At Last”, but I couldn’t identify the

most beautiful voice that was singing it. I emailed the station, who

were great enough to provide me the information I needed. I found a

music site that let me know that Eva had a number of CD’s. Then the

Napster provided me with several beautiful songs, which I have been

listening to now for hours. I hoped there might be something about Eva

on the net, so I gambled and won plugging her name into the web. And

here I am, listening to Autumn Leaves, wanting to cry, feeling the

goosebumps that happens to me when I hear really amazing music, and

grateful that piece by piece I was led to discover this incredible

talent who left such a wonderful gift behind. I’ll go out and get the

CD’s, crank up the volume, light the candles, and enjoy.

I’ve got very mixed feelings about listening to Eva’s music. I’m a great

fan of female vocalists (please check out Christine Collister if you

haven’t already), and so Eva has become an immediate favourite, even

though I have only been familiar with her work for a matter of weeks.

Although her sheer class shines through, I can’t help but feel sad that

we have been robbed of a very special person. I can only liken it to

the feeling of watching Richard Beckinsale, the brilliant English comedy

actor who died aged 31, and feeling sad at his early parting. I feel sad

that I will never see Eva or meet her. Reading the sleeve notes on her

albums, it is obvious that she must have been a really nice girl, and

that all of her friends and family must have thought the world of her.

My heart goes out to Mr. and Mrs. Cassidy, having lost such a special

I discovered Eva Cassidy last March 31 by way of the Songbird album and

I remember it vividly. Time stopped for a while. Her music and her story

moved me more than anything else in a long time. They still do and the

experience has brought an odd mixture of joy and sadness that doesn’t

seem to fade. I’ve since tried to pass the word where I could and have

found quite a few new fans. I listen to something of Eva’s almost daily

and she still brings a tear to my eye. She is my favorite singer of all

time.

But Eva was more than a musician. Two weeks ago on the fourth

anniversary of Eva’s passing, I sent a fifty dollar contribution to the

Eva Cassidy foundation and received a print of Eva’s artwork “Boy in the

Nest” in return. I had guessed that looking at Eva’s art in detail would

be every bit as moving as listening to her music and its true. Her

spirit shines in all her work, musical and otherwise and it is not at

all diluted by a good reproduction. I feel very privileged.

I was surprised to see that I have the seventh out of one thousand

prints that were produced. I strongly encourage anyone reading this to

make a contribution and receive one of these prints. It would help the

foundation aid music education in the Washington DC area schools and

spread Eva’s legacy. In return you will receive something you will

cherish. If you have a friend who is an Eva Cassidy fan, a print could

make a nice Christmas present. Follow the link on the home page of

The focus so far has been mainly on Eva’s music and rightly so. She was

in a musical league of her own and most of her recordings tower over big

selling commercial products. However Eva was also a brilliant artist. If

this project is successful, perhaps there could be reproductions of her

other works. I sure hope so.

come back. I first heard Eva on our national radio station BBC radio2, I

was just sitting having breakfast still waking up when this voice came

through singing Fields of Gold, I was spellbound. The clarity, the

emotion, the range was amazing, I knew I had never heard a voice like it

before so I listened carefully for the name at the end and thankfully I

got it. But not the fact that Eva had died. That was so sad when I heard

I first heard Eva Cassidy at Borders. They were playing this incredible

beautiful music and I just had to have the CD. I since have bought all

of Eva’s CD’s and only feel sad because there won’t be any more. Her

voice is something to be cherished, it stirs emotions within me that no

other music or artist has very before. Her song “Songbird” fills me with

joy and sadness as it reminds me of my father who passed away a few

years ago. In my quest to expose her music to others I have found that

every time I play her music people are drawn to it and they seem to want

to know more about who is behind that beautiful voice. Eva’s music

brings joy and sadness and moves the listener to feel something, sad or

happy, doesn’t matter as you are moved to really listen to the words of

“Time After Time”. Try out “At Last” and “Time After Time”. Although I

have never met Ms. Cassidy I imagine that the person behind the music

I have only recently been turned onto Eva by a friend and have all four

of the albums I am aware of. My favorite is the Songbird album which has

five of my favorite songs she sings right at the top of the disc.

I have never heard a more soulful and beautiful voice. Eva was blessed

with one of the most beautiful and soulful voices I have ever heard. I

can listen to the music for hours and never get tired of listening to

her voice. The musicians who accompany her do an excellent job of

complimenting her talent. She was very fortunate to work with some great

people who could bring out her fabulous talent.

I will keep enjoying the recordings I have of Eva and can only say that

the world suffered a great loss at her demise.

Well I must admit when I first found out about Eva I was at work and

checking the internet found a song on the Washington Post web site and

listened and was instantly a fan. There are few voices that can touch

you innermost soul out there today and Eva had that type of voice. Very

Powerful, yet very sweet and touching. Can’t wait to get my hands on the

new album “Time After Time” Sure its going to be great. Please tell your

friend/family about this voice and person that needs to be heard and

really listened to in order to appreciate. Whenever I am having a not so

that bad after all. Unfortunately I was not able to hear Eva sing live

I was immediately attracted to her voice when I heard “Fields of Gold”

in a local record store in downtown Toronto about a week ago. Bought

Songbird right away and has been listening to it almost non-stop, at

home, in the car…. My whole family fell in love with the CD. (My 12

yrs old daughter’s favourite is “Wade in the Water”.) I played “Over the

Rainbow” to my children’s choir at church(I am one of the directors) and

the kids loved it too. I wanted to buy her other CDs but they are hard

to find. She is the best and most versatile singer I have ever listened

to….Ella, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Karen Carpenter all-in-one.

Amazing voice, feeling, technique, phrasing, musicianship. What a

I also heard about Eva on NPR. I didn’t get to hear the entire interview but when she sang “Over the Rainbow” I knew she was special. I’ve been
thinking about her often. I’ve told all my friends about her and have been enjoying her music. What a wonderful talent she had. She’s very

I had never heard of Eva until I heard the end of the broadcast on Top of the Pops, December 16th. I heard enough to make the hair on the back
of my neck stand on end and I managed to catch her surname and the name of an album. I told my partner and she bought me the album for
Christmas. I put it on straight away and began to read the insert about her. It was only then, as I was listening to her singing “Fields of
Gold” that I discovered that she had died so tragically.
It brought a tear to my eye.

Have been listening to Eva NON STOP over the holidays and it seems to get better every time I listen. Tried to get my wife to understand what
makes her voice so special, she was not interested and I went on listening not wanting to force her to hear great singing. I think what she
didn’t understand was that the songs she is singing are all familiar but done a way that only Eva could do. I will remain vigilant in trying to
pass on to people what music is and should be. Eva touches all of us in different ways but the one thing that we all have in common is what a
truly great vocalist she is. Well all the best to everyone for the new year. I still have a few albums that I need to purchase. Take care and a

While driving to work this past week I heard the short 8-minute segment on NPR about Eva Cassidy. Eva’s beautiful voice and story really touched
my heart. Although tragic in many ways, I believe that her passing must have been for a reason. Her music is now bringing joy to many and her
story hopefully will help to raise awareness and funds to find a cure for skin cancer. I have sent a donation in memory of Eva Cassidy to the
Johns Hopkins University Fund for Melanoma and Skin Cancer Research . Based on the many comments in this guestbook, a small donation from every
new Eva Cassidy fan would surely have a dramatic impact.

Having been a HUGE fan of Eva for the past one and a half years, I was subjected to a very shocking development recently after entering our
local Borders Book & Music Store. Just a few short days earlier, there were over thirty copies of Eva Cassidy recordings on the shelves for
sale.
Hmm, I thought that maybe Eva’s records were moved to a more prominent location for display for the Christmas Holidays. Then I spoke with
the Border’s staff and they informed me that all of Eva’s records had “SOLD OUT in just one day!” WHEW – – The wonders of Radio! Many Thanks to
Laura, to NPR, BBC Radio 2 and to Bill Thompson.

I heard the NPR piece, and was in tears, the sadness of her story partly, but mostly because I had just heard a few notes of a voice I knew was
the most beautiful voice I have EVER heard. After work, I battled Christmas crowds and traffic to get here CD’s. I listen to Songbird ALL day
long, ..Over the Rainbow, Fields of Gold, Autumn Leaves, or Songbird, I have to stop working for lack of concentration…her music overwhelms
me. My wife thinks I’m nuts…so I just keep her CD’s at work. When she “Over the Rainbow” peaks, I just can’t help growling with gritted teeth
“IT SUCKS SHE’S GONE!”

I had to pick Songbird as my favourite album as it is the only one that I have at present. I completely missed out on Eva, I didn’t see TOTP2 I
didn’t hear radio 2 plays. However my wife bought Songbird for me as a Christmas present. I must admit that I was a bit taken aback as I had
never heard of Eva but I was told that I should just listen to it. It was put into the portable CD player in the kitchen as we were preparing
dinner. It was absolutely awesome from the first moments of Fields of Gold onwards and a what a surprise as it moved from pop to folk to gospel
etc etc. there were several mementos that made the hair stick up on the back of your neck. Wonderful, I thought, then I was told that tragically
she had died. I have to say that that this touched me deeply even though I had only been in her company for the duration of the CD. I now have
the other 4 CDs on order from jungle – I do agree that their site is irritating.

I was lucky enough to hear one of Eva Cassidy’s songs the other day, well how do you express what she makes you feel like, when you hear those
songs, I have never in my life heard a song as beautiful as Over the Rainbow, and what makes it more feeling is she is now no longer with us, I

I didn’t know about Eva Cassidy before I heard the NPR report last week on my way into work. By the end of the story tears were rolling
involuntarily down my cheeks. I immediately logged-on to my computer and bought Songbird. I got it three days later and have been mesmerized.
Her music is astonishing; what a gift that we have the opportunity to experience it.

I’m not a particularly religious person, but hearing Eva sing Over the Rainbow on NPR convinced me that there must be a greater power capable of
winning our feeble hearts not through fear, but by allowing us a brief glimpse into the intense beauty that humans can create. When my 14 year

In today’s Washington Post Weekend magazine, in a review of the “Best of 2000” critic Richard Harrington

picked ‘Time After Time’ as the second best record released last year. Among his comments he writes:

“This set collects a dozen previously unreleased tracks, and no matter the ostensible genre – folk, rock, pop, blues, gospel – Cassidy
transports these standards to a higher plane with a pure, soulful voice that was one in many millions”. I think we would all agree that that
pretty much says it all.

Yesterday I bought Eva By Heart. I don’t know why, I’d never heard of her or anything by her. After playing the CD I rushed straight back out to
the record shop and bought Live at Blues Alley, The Other side and Time After Time. I can’t believe that just over a week after we lost one of
our finest female singer/songwriters in Kirsty MacColl, I discover a singer of such rare talent as Eva only to find that she is no longer with
us.

I first heard Eva sing “Over the Rainbow” on TOTP2 – and was mesmerised, luckily I’d taped the programme and I promptly rewound the track and
listened to it again, noting down the name of her album (Songbird). Today I tried to get it but the shop had just sold out. I ordered it,
thinking she had only made the one album. Lucky for me the lady in the next queue was buying three albums by her. I bought 2 and tomorrow I am
going to buy any more I can find. Excellent. Not only will I be recommending her albums, I shall be buying them for special fiends.

Thanks to NPR and pure serendipity I was introduced to Eva Cassidy and will not soon forget her marvelous ability. I shared her unbelievable
talent with my wife who is fighting for her life against cancer. To say she was uplifted was an understatement. For myself, I cannot adequately
describe my sadness at the loss of such a gifted person, and the possibilities that will never be. Indeed, I am thankful that my dial was tuned
to the right place last week permitting me to hear her for the first time. Ii will be my fortune to share Eva with others, and I will.

Eva and I share the same birthday, February 2nd. As soon as I heard her voice for the first time, I was overcome with the purity her music
conveys. I consider her to be my angel. When I sing her music, it’s as if she is right there with me and I am transported to another place. I
appreciate her even more for providing me with the song I consider my “theme song”–“How Can I Keep From Singing”. I am truly a music lover, but
Eva holds a special place when she says, “My life goes on in endless song, above its lamentations…above the tumult and the strife, I hear its

I bought Songbird as a Christmas present for a friend after seeing ‘Over the Rainbow’ on TOTP2 here in UK. I wasn’t sure if I’d made the right
decision (my friend’s a bit of a clubber/raver, although still a music lover) so I put the CD on. From the opening notes of Fields of Gold, I
knew that she would love it; by the end of the CD I loved it, and had to tape it before I gave it at Xmas. My friend later told me that the
album had made her cry – I know what she means.

I first heard Eva singing Fields of Gold on Radio Two and loved it. My first thought was what a beautiful voice. I now have two of Eva’s albums,
but intend to buy some more shortly. When I found out that Eva had passed away at such a young age I was shocked and upset, I think it makes the
albums even more special. I nearly always get a tear in my eyes when listening to Eva’s lovely voice. What a very sad loss.
