To Joanne Murphy Cardine, ref: your entry on 26 Dec. Really enjoyed your account of your time at school with Eva. Fascinated about you and Eva performing Stairway to Heaven, that's my all time favourite song and one of the first I learned to play on my acoustic guitar ( I still play and sing it - not with my band - only on my own!) Now if only Eva had recorded that song, WOW! what a version THAT would have been !!!!

I see friends shaking hands, saying how do you do, They're really saying, I love you. In such turbulent times, let's revisit this classic re-done by the awesome Miss Cassidy and take heed. Over the Rainbow she may be, but s'long as I have her voice to comfort me, You can tell the sun in its jealous sky, that I've walked through the fields of gold. It's like soft honey flowing down your throat, soothing it. It's like closing your eyes and feeling tears of joy, and sadness too, at the same time welling up inside. It's like being close to death and being so full of life. She makes me want to break things and mend things at the same time. Imagine, Lennon too the philanthropist, said we ought to unite. Let's take music as our guide and remove geographical boundaries. All men are equal, different only in accordance to their virtues. This is a most beautiful planet and we can all live in harmony if we so choose. All you need is love. Don't disappoint Louis, he thought it was a Wonderful World, it was...let's make it the same once again. We can. Peace

Can someone please translate Enrique's message for me? Cos I'm really interested in knowing what people from different places have to say about Eva. Also to Anne Makin, I think it's quite a coincident that so many people were exposed to Eva through that one song. It's the most beautifulo rendition of that song ever. Bill Withers couldn't have done it better if he'd tried. It's sensous, dreamy, painful and raw with attitude. It's so cool!

The first time I heard Eva Cassidy sing she made me cry! I think TOTP2 played some video footage of her in a club playing Over the Rainbow and it just blew me away. Good old Terry on BBC Radio 2 made sure I heard People Get Ready and that was it, get me an album now please. Have been a fan since. Got the book for Christmas and am looking forward to a pleasurable read. (Cheers M!)

To: Brian of Chartham, UK - Tue 24 December I too saw the recent UK TV programme on the best moments of TV in 2002 in "soap weddings" and heard Eva's OTR playing in the background. In fact Brian, not really being a soap fan myself, listening to OTR was the best part of the programme for me. I enjoy listening to Eva's voice in the background of anything even though I have all of her CDs and have listened to each and every track hundreds of times. You can never have too much of a good thing.

The first time I heard about Eva was seeing Ted Koppel's "Nightline" piece on her....I immediately rushed out and bought 'The Other Side' and 'Live At Blues Alley.' After I left the store, I put them in my car and listened to her in the parking lot...every song...I was in tears her voice is so beautiful. I cannot remember when someone or something has stirred me as much as Eva and that incredible voice of hers. What a gift she brought to the world, if for only a very brief time. She would have been about my age. Wow. Happy New Year to everyone!! Peace.

To Asad, here is a very rough translation of Enrique's message (sorry, my Spanish is not very good): "The first time I heard Eva Cassidy's recordings, it was only for a short time, two or three months, and I couldn't believe what I was hearing. A sweetness and a rhythm so fine and delicate, that I haven't heard in many years. It is a sorrow that I will have forever. Your voice, irreplaceable, leaves an emptiness that will be impossible to fill. I consider myself fortunate to have come across your CDs." To Joanne Murphy Cardine: Thanks for sharing your memories with us! It's a real treat to hear from people who knew her, even if it was for a short time. They must be very special memories for you. (As always, a tip of the hat to Joe and Morag in Scotland!)

The first time I heard "Had I a Golden Thread" I felt chills all over. What Eva did truly touched me. I recently read in a magazine article that Eva felt that, "Had I a Golden Thread" turned out perfectly. All I have to say to that is, "Amen sister." To me all of Eva's performances were truly breathtaking and amazing. I love her work. I enjoy singing and playing guitar. Since she has inspired me to do so. I'll never ever be as amazing as she. I seriously doubt if anyone will.

I heard Eva Cassidy (songbird) on the radio just a few weeks ago and I have since bought three of her albums. I cannot accurately articulate the incredible experience I have every time I play her music. No matter what I amd doing or how I am feeling, it transends me to a higher level each time I hear her voice no matter what song... her voice is so effortless ( like liquide magic)... Her angelic voice leads me as close as I can get to heaven while my two feet are still on earth. Her music has provided me with a much stronger sense of comfort, hope and peace. I am so grateful that I have come to know of her music.

My mother gave me a cd for xmas that a friend burned for her...it was Songbird and i cannot believe how sensational - how moving, how it connects with my soul...songs like Fields of Gold particularly. I've had it on repeat for days...how absolutely dreadful that Eva died so young and didn't know that even down here in the Great South Land of Australia we love her music. Friends at work tell me the ABC radio plays her music quite a bit....i'll be buying whatever i can find of Eva's cd's.

My husband bought me the Eva Cassidy album, Songbird for my birthday last year. When I heard the song, over the rainbow, I was reduced to tears and everytime I play it I cry. Just the way that she sings it, makes all the hair on my body stand on end. I think it is such a pity that she is no longer here to produce much more fantastic music. My husband also bought me the Songbird book for Christmas and I have just started to read it, it is wonderful to learn so much more about Eva. My best regards to all her family and friends for sharing her with us.

I have a question. Approximately how tall was Eva Cassidy? The reason I'm asking is because, in the photographs in the fantastic Songbird book, she looks quite tall in some pictures (for example, the picture of her in the doorway in the room she rented from Jackie Fletcher), while she looks quite short in others (for example, standing beside Chris Biondo in the picture taken outside of his studio). Therefore, I'm hoping that Laura (LOVE this site) or one of Eva's friends or band members can answer this question--just out of my own curiosity. Thanks. Eva Cassidy rocks :-)

Here in Japan it took me some time to find out who was singing "Fields Of Gold" in that figure skating program performed by Michelle Kwan.On December 22 I got "Songbird" at last. I really admire Eva's voice(sometimes angelic and sometimes a bit melancholy) accompanied simply, and also her taste in arranging songs. I've noticed there's an array of Kokeshi dolls at the window in the cover photo of "Eva By Heart"(though I haven't got it yet) I wonder if she had collected them. I'm so happy to find this site.Thank you(^-^)

Juli, how wonderful to hear from an Eva fan in Japan. The photograph of Eva on the "Eva by Heart" CD booklet was taken by Eva's mother in Nova Scotia, Canada, in the home of a member of their family. So the dolls on the windowsill were not collected by Eva. I didn't know those dolls were called Kokeshi dolls. What does that mean? And to Bill Cronauer: on page 49 of the Songbird book you'll find a photograph of Eva's learner's permit. It gives her height as "5-02".

I purchased my first Eva Cassidy album prior to knowing she had passed over. I was impressed by her beautiful voice unique arrangements and interpretations which seemed to reach to my heart and soul. It probably sounds crazy, but to me,her music suggests that she had some inner knowledge that her life would be tragically cut short. I have all her albums and would like to know why her version of "The Rose" was never released?

The coolest thing was when a friend also had one of her CD's and neither of us knew that the other knew who she was. I was just wondering why I had never seen one of her CD's while I was flipping through them at stores and such until just recently. She has now inspired me to sing the songs I have written over the years! I wish I could tell her thanks but I was hoping that you could tell her family and friends how much I appreciate her music!

I sat there and listened trying to figure out who she was. So a few days after christmas I took my son to some old neighbors to stay the night and she said I have a gift for you, it was Eva Cassidy Songbird. So when I got in my car and put the cd in I knew right away that this was the same person who had sang Imagine. I am so thankful for that gift!!!!!! I would have never known who this amazing person is. I am only very sorry to not have Eva here. But I am so thankful to have her beautiful music. I still believe our "Voice of an Angel," Eva Cassidy is a continuum of Annette Hanshaw's great singing in the 1920's and 1930's. From age 16 she quit at age 26 at the top of her career. Listen to "Big City Blues," or "Lovable and Sweet." for great samples of her work. She had a great improvisation gift and a voice that will stop you in your tracks. Her website: http://www.redhotjazz.com/Hanshaw.html Great news! The Google free website gives us access to a web page with over 20 Eva Cassidy sites containing excellent audio interviews including one with her mother and written articles about Eva. I went to ask someone at our music shop and they gave my Eva Cassidy 'Songbird'. The song was called Fields of gold. It also had the song 'Over the rainbow', which was a song i had known for all my life, but i didn't know it was her! Her songs make me feel happy and she had such a good tallant. I think it is horrid that such good, hard-trying people die. I wish she was still here.

Sheesh! I woke up on the couch Saturday night to SBS Weather Watch and the most glorious voice. I don't like that many women's voices - too high, too whiney - so to get "a glorious" from me was remarkable. I was so taken by the voice, I stayed with WeatherWatch for the remainder of the album, by Eva Cassidy, the scrolling message told me. Gee, I thought, I must remember this in the morning. I want that album. Most remarkable - most of my collection is blues/southern US oriented and here I was planning to buy an album of classic folk songs by a woman I'd never heard of. It being 3am, I had no recollection the next morning. And then, my favourite little web-casting radio station, WDVX in Clinton Tennessee, mentioned her, just a little while ago, so here I am at your thoughtfully compiled website, feeling a bit lost, 'cause Eva's dead. Darn, drat, double drat, mumble, grumble, blast and tarnation! Well, thanks for putting the site together. I can hear her music at least! What a pretty girl! What a pity.

Eva is certainly one of the most beautiful voices, persons, and talents I have heard. Her voice is so soulful and filled with so much meaning and understanding of life. Such a great loss as a talent but mostly to all those who knew her personally and loved her. I am thankful to have had the privilege to know of her music and to hear it even if sadly we cannot see her perform it personally and watch her grow as a person and as an artist. Her music is very calming and healing. Did she know her life would be so short? Perhaps, she did in some way. Why is life so hard for so many?

Iz sang the same way, with joy. Peace and Joy in the new year, janb

I did not realise that she had passed over at this stage. The day of purchasing the CD, my sister-in-law was visiting from Queensland, and I told her about this wonderful Eva. That is when she said that Eva had passed away. I was so very sad. However, I went out and bought the CD, Imagine, and have played it constantly ever since. Eva has the most pure, magical voice I have ever heard. Even better than Barbra Striesand, sorry Babs!! So, now I am spreading the word about this wonderful songbird, she is truly sensational. God Bless you Eva, you are a real angel!! Love Vanessa

In 2001 I first heard of Eva Cassidy, but I don't exactly remember how, because it was just a fleeting reference somewhere. I bought "Songbird" out of curiosity and as a present for my sister-in-law, but I listened to it first and absolutely loved it. Just before Xmas 2002 I attended a charity concert, where a popular British singer called Will Young sang "Fields of Gold", just accompanied by an acoustic guitar - in the style of Eva Cassidy rather than Sting - and it blew me away and reminded me that I had bought that album. I borrowed it back from my sister-in-law, was once again impressed and yesterday I treated myself to "Live at Blues Alley". It's absolutely brilliant and I prefer it to Songbird, though I miss "Over the Rainbow". The fact that it's a live album just shows how talented Eva was. Eva's voice touches me like almost no-one else's. It is such a tragedy that she will never know just how far-reaching her music has turned out to be and how many people she has touched with it. Love and a Happy New Year to everyone. Frauke

Love his cd & version of OTR also. When I discovered Eva, her version became #1. But you are so right, he also was taken too early. rose

Thanks Laura, for the acknowledgement on your "What's New Page" of my discovery of Eva Cassidy's "lost song" on the NPR web site, "It's Not The Presents Under My Tree," by Time Life Music, a free 3 minute song to be heard and downloaded. Now if we could only ger fans to go to your "What's New Page," and follow the easy instruction to this great song on NPR. What do you think of this song if you do hear it? Eva is singing to all of us about how important we are to her, as our "Presence" is what it's all about and the "Ring" we give her, symbolizing love and friendhip. What a song for anyone who has lost someone. It makes the tears flow again. It's needs to be on the next CD Eva will have released.

How is one supposed to actually pick just one favorite?! I have at least sixteen. All i want to say is that when i heard "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", it made me cry. My own daughter was once obsessed with "being" dorothy and i never thought anyone could best Judy Garland's rendition. i can sit down and get lost in that song and pretend that all is well in the world and troubles really do "melt like lemon drops". thank you, eva. may you be flying above the rainbow with the bluebirds. i wish i could join you.

Since, having discoverd Eva almost 2 years ago. I have bought all her albums. Imagine, is really even better than some of the others. Just because it is just Eva and her guitar on those few tracks. I just wanted to say that I was watching a PBS show on Lance Loud of the Loud family that was followed in documentary fashion in the 70's. Sadly, he died of AIDS on May, 2001. His partner or a friend at his Memorial Service sang Eva's version of "Over the Rainbow.". I just had to listen when they announced that was the song he was going to sing. I do not know if anyone has already posted this tidbit of info on the web-site. I have not been here for a few months. I did not see it so far. Thanks Again!! Laura for all the work you do to keep the web-site going. I'm glad, that you are having a Good New Year for 2003. OH! I too saw the Michelle Kwan skating. It was just beautiful.Hearing, Eva sing as she skated was just Spectacular! I also understand that Eva is on the Providence (NBC TV show) that went off the air. I have tried to get this CD but have not been able to find it. I do not know which of Eva's songs is on this CD. I missed the show that they played it on. Do you know what song it is? Thanks!! Happy New Year! 2003 Deb

I discovered Eva through a newspaper article on August 28, 2002. My interest was piqued by the author's accolades towards Eva. I listened to some of her music on the computer and was just totally BLOWN AWAY. Only a couple of weeks later I came across her book Songbird and of course bought it because I was already obsessed with her. I was telling everyone I knew about her and that they should listen to her. I don't know which cd to buy yet, but do want to start a collection soon. I think she was truly an angel sent to earth to sing for us.

I first heard Eva's voice in a small store that sells candles. I remember hearing "Fields of Gold" and thinking 'wow'. I went straight up to the store clerk and asked who it was singing it. That's when she told me about Eva and how she sadly wasn't alive anymore. I'd never heard such a voice. I actually started to cry in the store. The same day, I bought "Time After Time" and fell in love with her Cyndi Laupers cover. Since then I have bought "Eva By Heart" and "Songbird" and my favourite song is "People Get Ready"

Firstly I would like to thank Mr.Terry Wogan of BBC Radio 2 for introducing me to the music of Eva Cassidy by costantly plugging "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" at every given opportunity. I now have another favourite artist in my collection and at this moment in time I have two of Eva's albums "Songbird" and "Imagine". My all time favourite song is "Imagine" by John Lennon and I could only listen to John's version, that is until now, Eva's version is superb and I now have two versions of the greatest lyrics ever written. I want to know more about miss Eva Cassidy and her backlog of C.D's and hope I have found the right website to do her justice.

The voice, the feeling, the timing !!! It's perfect! Her music just talks soul to soul !!! I'm speechless !!! WOW! What a great voice!!! Saw the program on Swedish TV1 yesterday and was really impressed with Eva's voice! I am a singer myself and got very inspired by her interpretations. It was also good to actually show how the record companies sacrifices a great voice in their sad struggle to put everyone into a little genre-box. I write my own music and know how sad today's musical climat is. It's all about the money. It was refreshing to hear someone truly talanted! Too bad the record companies are too narrowminded for their own good.

I fell in love with Eva instantly. I had a co-worker at work that was listening to the CD Songbird. She told me to listen to Over The Rainbow. I rolled my eyes, thinking that it would be another cheesy recording. In my mind no one could touch Judy's version though many, very many, have tried. I agreed to listen and within a few notes, I was hooked. I mean, her phrasing was so totally unique and with her pure sweet voice, it really got me. I mean, it ripped my heart out. I couldn't believe it but Eva's version of Over The Rainbow was making tears run down my cheek. I couldn't believe that that song could sound so new and fresh and different. It was the end of my shift at work. I couldn't leave. I stayed and listened to the whole CD and fell in love with Eva. I now have Eva By Heart, Time After Time, Method Actor and have Imagine and Live At Blues Alley on order. I am going out today to find The Other Side. I think I am becoming obsessed becaue I have come to this web site and am now looking for any other songs available with Eva's voice. I hope more of Eva's music will be released. Over The Rainbow hooked me but I would hate to choose a favorite album or song. I am still amazed at how Eva could take another artist's signature song and totally make it Eva's! PS After finding out about Eva's tragic death, I became connected to her in another way because I am a survivor of Melanoma now for 5 years!

I went to a Music Store and bought the CD "Songbird". I am a guitarist, songwriter, with one goal in my live: to let people know when music is in tone and when not. I have never heard a person play the guitar as pure and in tone as Eva and sing as pure and in tone as she did. OOPS! I was so caught up in the "Swedish Invasion" that I made my screen name look Swedish! I also hit "send" before finishing my post! I was just relating my observation of the groundswell of interest in Eva over the last few years. I am not certain as to any legal restrictions relative to copyright, but I have tried for a long while to obtain video clips of Eva singing live. If any of the new Swedish converts would be willing to send me a copy of the documentary, I would gratefully show you my appreciation!

I saw Eva's CD "Imagine" laying on a friends table yesterday. Then later in the day my friend asked if I'd heard her voice. I decided today to try to find information on her since my friend said she has an amazing voice. I 'm saddened to hear of her death but would love to learn and hear more about her work.

According to the cd-webstore´s top-selling list Eva has five records in the top fifteen!!! I think she finally made it in Sweden. Laura, I thank you for this superb homage-site for Eva. A friend put together a CD of some of his favorite songs. He listed the songs names but not the titles. When I got to the cover of Emilylou Harris' "Wayfaring Stranger" I was floored. I had to know who's voice this was. He told me Eva Cassidy. I went straight to the music store and bought Live at Blues Alley and Imagine. I've since added Eva by Heart and The Other Side. Thank you Eva, and your bandmates, for making such beautiful music and may you rest in peace.

My heart stopped beating, my ears were delighted, and my soul was deeply touched, when I saw and listened to Eva for the first time on Swedish tv the other day. To watch and hear her with the knowledge that she had passed away so young made me almost cry. I also could recognize myself a lot in both her looks as well as her singing and guitar playing. I'm a struggling singer myself, will be 30 this year, and I feel that the music industry have no room for me. I have recently given up after 14 years of hard work. It hurts my soul that I can't live off of what I love doing the most. But, this is the cruel reality, just like it was for Eva. Famous after her death...Who knows, maybe I will be more appreciated after my death as well? Such a sad thought, yet bitter-sweet. I wonder how Eva's personality was. I would have loved to get to know her. Maybe our personality's were alike too? Now, I can't wait to hear all her songs!!! so, far I've only heard a few on the tv program. I imagine listening to her singing all my favorite tunes....can't think of anything I'd enjoy to hear more. Maybe she is singing some of my favorites on her cd's, that remains to be discovered.... Where can I order her cd's??? God bless you all!

Further to Rick's comment on 10 Jan and Laura's response, it would be great if Eva's family (or whoever else controls her material) would release the film clips on video or dvd. They are making them available to the media, and her fans all over the world would greatly appreciate having the opportunity to purchase them. Best wishes to Laura, all the regulars to this site, and to those who have just discovered Eva.

Lars, Cool that I was not the only one who thought of janis joplin when i heard Eva sing. I don´t know why really, i just did.I also want to say that i agree with Kristin " it was refreshing to hear someone truly talented". Because there are a lot of talented people. rarely if ever do they get to show it to the world. Most of what we hear is shit (sorry). I´m saying that record companies don´t do what they should. Find the talent and give them the chance to develop. Don´t try to "make" a talent. Even if it´s a gamble. I don´t know if Eva wanted to make it big, but it does not matter. Almost everone who saw the programme and blue note boss will agree that it was a mistake not to sign her. To put it gently..

What is it about this song that draws every emotion out of me? From the Time After Time CD.... "Penny To My Name" Bill and I got married following our first born Daddy left this gas & convenience store just before he died And I was only nineteen when I had my third baby And sometimes I think maybe I should've left here long ago Travellers are stopping by, check their oil and their p.s.i. Gas up and away to fly, moving down the line But this beat-up truck & worn out shoes always give me the blues Billy sucking down the booze nearly every night Chorus I never seen the city lights How they must shine so bright Not like this country night The sky's black as coal And this gas-station mountain home Not a thing to call my own How I wish I was alone With a penny to my name Strangers say this mountain here is beautiful beyond compare But it's just a dumb old mountain; I see it every day If I could see sunset skies over fields of green or ocean-tides, City skyline in the night, I'll be dancing till the dawn Chorus Bill and I got married following our first born Daddy left this gas & convenience store just before he died Maybe Bill & I someday will find a chance to get away Until then it's here I'll stay wishing on a star. Could it be the desperation in the lives of so many people with no way out or is it the reality of life ending to soon before fame can be realized. Thanks to Roger Henderson for this great song and Eva Cassidy for this beautiful rendition.

All you Danish Eva fans, now is a perfect time to start working on the two major Danish tv stations, DR and TV2, to get them to air SVT1's Eva show. DR can be reached at dr@dr.dk while it is a little less easy to get in touch with TV2. Here you must go to the web page http://omtv2.tv2.dk/adresser/kontakt.asp and click the email link "e-mail: TV 2 /DANMARK" next to the TV2 logo. On the page you are now taken to, type in your email address, a heading for your message and the message itself. Don't forget to choose a topic from the drop-down list. I suppose this should be "TV 2/Programplanlægningen". There is so much plastic on TV. We must have one hour of pearl. Right?

Imagine my surprise when I turned over the channel and heard the sweet sounds of Eva singing Fever. Hi all Eva followers and a special hello to all the Swedish newcomers. The response to the recent programme on SVT reminds me of how the groundswell began here, culminating in two #1 albums in the UK, after a clip of Eva singing Over The Rainbow was shown on BBC TV. It is exciting to see Sweden getting the Eva bug and at the same time frustrating that recognition of Eva is still very patchy in her home country. I must echo what a few others have said here, Laura - can we hope for a video/DVD release of the Blues Alley (and others) tapes? What is the copyright situation? Is it so difficult to get? If the Songbird biography, only published in the UK, has sold over 100,000 copies (soft and hardback combined) in little over a year, just imagine what numbers a DVD release of Eva and the band singing some of our favourite tracks could obtain.

I heard Eva Cassidy for the first time last Thursday on Swedish Television. I was quite stunned and taken by her appearance and couldn't take me eyes and ears from her from the first note to the last. I haven't experienced such a voice with such an intensity and presence for many years. I have listened to jazz, blues, folk, rock and other types of music since early 60's, but this was really something. So tragic her life ended so early. You should never compare an artist to another, but Evas reminds me a little of the swedish jazz singer Monica Zetterlund and of the fragile norwegian jazz singer Radka Toneff, who sadly died in 1988.

I first heard about Eva about two years ago in a passing conversation with an online acquaintance about great jazz singers. "Of course," she said, "you have to include Eva Cassidy in the top five..." It was the first time I'd heard the name. It wasn't the last. In the last couple of years I've managed to collect, from various sources, seven of her albums. God, what a great, eclectic body of work! Linda, you had it wrong. Ms. Cassidy was so much more than merely a jazz singer! I have spent countless hours listening to Eva and company, and recruiting others to the cause. I haven't had anyone express any regrets.... As for this website; thanks, Laura! You've been a great source of news and information. And, after reading this guest book on and off for a while, I felt it was high time I contributed. Thanks then, too, to those of you who have left messages here. I've felt among kindred spirits here. It's nearly as heartwarming as listening to the lady herself.

From time to time TOTP2 do specials on a particular top artist with tracks and interviews info etc. The show's half-hour format would be perfect for an Eva special. We get to see all the uncut video and maybe some interviews with band members as well. Why not email the show's producer and put in a request, he knows it would be popular, the OTR video was their most requested track ever! emial Mark Hagen at: mark.hagen@bbc.co.uk

At the end of the first track `I Know You By Heart` i found myself weeping. I play guitar myself so i realise how hard it is to play and sing at the same time. First heard her CD at the music store over the PA system. She was singing "Over the Rainbow". Everyone in the store stopped what they were doing and stood still - listening. It was an amazing sight. Many of us had tears in our eyes and when she finished we realized we had heard something truly special. I have listened to this CD many many times and am still moved to tears by the honesty of her singing. She sings from a place of purity and truth. Only a true artist can reach this place. We are all blessed to have such an angel looking over us.

Add me to the list of those who discovered Eva through figure skating, of all things. This is from someone who has followed the "jamband" scene closely the last couple of years, writing articles on people like Phil Lesh's band. I'm not real "up" on a lot of pop music but how'd I miss this? I guess cause I don't watch Nightline or the WB, don't always get to everything in the NYT or the Journal like I should, and most of the music passed to me is rare bootleg material. As was suggested in one of the articles on this fantastic website, I'm sure I had heard Eva's music in passing. I probably watched that Michelle Kwan exhibition at the Olympics. I'm NOT THAT BIG a figure skating fan, by the way. Don't tell my friends, but the beauty of it makes me makes me cry sometimes. Probably more because of the music than the skating. Years ago Brian Boitano performed to an acoustic cover of John Waite's Missing You. I really liked it (much more than the original) but I never found out who it was. This time I resolved to find out. I was watching the NY Giant/SF 49'ers game a few Sundays ago and when the Giants went up 38-14 (they eventually lost) I switched over to see the last 30 seconds of Kristi Yamaguchi's skate. I made a mental note..."acoustic Imagine"...and later punched it up on Amazon. Quite honestly, I hadn't heard of Eva Cassidy when she came up. I haven't stopped listening, reading and crying since. P.S. Recently made another mental note about The Blind Boys of Alabama when I saw them on Don Imus' show and picked up their new album, which is quite good. Happily, it contains versions of People Get Ready and Wade in the Water. More than coincidence perhaps?

I first heard Eva Cassidy when I saw Michelle Kwan skating to "Fields of Gold". Michelle Kwan is a beautiful skater to watch, but I found myself paying more attention to the music than the skating! All I can remember thinking is "I have to find out who is singing that song!". I had heard Sting sing "Fields of Gold" but never thought much of it. When Eva sang it, it suddenly came alive. The song moved me to tears the first few times I listened to her sing it. I was deeply saddened to learn that Eva had passed away. I am a singer myself and can appreciate what a glorious gift she had. The world was truly robbed when it lost Eva Cassidy!! It is so rare that a soul is blessed with such an amazing gift as Eva had. I am so thankful that she recorded her music for the world to listen to. Even though she was not able to enjoy international commercial success within her lifetime (which she so richly deserved), I know that she is smiling down from heaven and leading a choir of angels in song. Her voice is a lasting testament to all those who sing for the joy of singing, that nothing good is ever lost to the world completely and that you should follow your dreams no matter what. Eva has inspired me to follow my own singing dream and I am starting today by going out and buying "Fields of Gold" on a karaoke CD. There are not enough words in my heart to say what I feel about Eva's gift. I only hope that I can someday make people feel as moved by my own singing as I have felt by hers.

Eva is so sweet. I suggest to anyone who loves her voice to buy a CD by the closest sounding vocalist, the late Sandy Denny. She was an English singer in the late 60's and early 70's, England's Woman vocalist of the year three years in a row. He fell down her steps and broke her neck at the top of her game. Her solo CD "Like an Old-Fashioned Waltz" or "Sandy" are the ones, preferable to her work with Fairport Convention. I'm positive that Eva Cassidy was influenced by Sandy Denny, as evidenced by her singing "Who knows where the Time Goes". Sandy Denny is the ONLY singer I've EVER heard that emotes like the magical Eva Cassidy, and was blessed with a longer career, and did first class recordings. She collaborated with Richard Thompson in Fairport Convention. I'd love to see a compliation of both Sandy Denny and Eva Cassidy. The collection would be seemless, and it would be very difficult to find any difference in the beauty of their magical voices. Cheers

I know that this is not the time or the place to be writing such stuff, but I'm a peacenik thru and thru. And this world is getting so messed up, it's lost it's amusement. There's war, famine, catastrophes going on all over the world, and there probably is something everyone can do about it, but no one is. It's a sad situation that man is against man. And we're all the same. We are all humans first, and then Muslims, Christians, Jews and whatever. Why can't we all just be together for the sake of humanity, if nothing else? I'd like everyone to pray and hope for a better future. I'm 20, but I'll STILL say that someone has to leave something in inheritance for our children and our children's children. My generation's gotten a strange enough planet as it is, and if the ball starts rolling and gains momentum, it might be difficult to stop it. What we, as humans are doing, is digging a well, and we're going on digging so deep, that eventually it might get extremely hard to get out, unless someone throws us a line. But there IS no one to do that. So let's hope and pray, and do our best to be the ones who can throw the line, in whatever way we can, contribute as we can, to making a better society and remove hate and prejudice from the world. We are all equal in the eyes of God, in the eyes of ANY God, Hindu Gods, the Muslim God, the Christian God...except on the basis of virtue. And if we cannot love our fellow man, who CAN we love? It's deplorable, and therefore, I just want everyone to pray that tomorrow the sun shines brighter and the storm passes and we have rainbows all over the place. Amen.

Hello everybody, My brother came up with another Eva lyrics link: http://lyrics.mp3s.ru/view/exec/Eva%20Cassidy/ This one is from Russia, but gets you to the lyrics immediately. Good to see that she's known there too! They have 29 songs. Seems Eva is getting a family thing 'cause my mum told me that they play at least one Eva song every week on one of our national late-night radio shows. Maybe we here in the Netherlands should bombard our national TV with requests for the swedish Eva show, too!!! Thanks Laura, for your great work, and thanks Chris B. for producing the unfinished Eva songs the way you did. Must be a hell of a responsability to do it in the way you think she would aprove of... Laura...you've probably already considered it, but if not, how about compiling a hardcover book with your website guestbook entries? You have thousands of entries ready for you to find the best ones to put in a book. That would be a book we'd all want to have. Reading these guestbook entries is so touching and wonderful...all of them are positive! One cannot read just a few of them without weeping with love. A title? What a wealth of possibilites right in the guestbook. Maybe "Letters to a Songbird"...or as one entry says, "Tonight My Ears Fell in Love" Best to you Laura.

There is not a doubt in my mind, that God created Eva Cassidy to make music. My only question is why he left her for such a short time, and where is she making music now? Eva is that proverbial angel I've heard so much about, When people say, "she sings like an angel", they had obviously heard Eva.

At the time I discovered her, I was going through a lot of personal problems and her music helped. I now have 4 CD's (only 2 I don't own and I will soon!) and listen to her all the time. Suits my current mood. I was quite amazed to find on the web site that her birthday was the same day as mine. Maybe that's part of the connection. I have loved Eva's music for a couple of years now along with my family and friends who I have converted along the way - running out and purchasing the music as soon as I could afford it! . . .As a 19 yr old singer/guitarist, Eva has touched me greatly. She continually educates us all, opening our minds and hearts to the many great artists who touched her the way she now touches us. Her success, despite resisting the artistically stifling one-genre practice of the music industry, proves that real appreciation of good music is not lost to the world. I wish there was a DVD of the complete performance "Live At Blues Alley" it would absolutely be the most precious footage. Why do we have to lose so many great artists? - Jeff Buckley, Eva, Piaf, to name but a few. My greatest disappointment is that I will never have the opportunity to see such a special performer play live, which is why I would give anything to have "Blues Alley" in its entirity. She is an inspiration to all - Thankyou Eva.

it is remarkable the way Eva Cassidy's music has created such a place for her in the inner world of my psyche that I dream about her and reflect as though she were someone so close to me. We have singers in Canada like K.D. Lang, and Celine Dion who, according to peoples tastes, moves them with their powerful and technically proficient voices, but Eva does not belong to this class at all. Eva's class is the class of saints called as Sufis in the middle east. The beauty and the power of the music of a true sufi is its purity of spiritual devotion. The sufi sings for the worship of nature, for the appretiation of God's love, and to share their ecstasy of union with God to others. The sufi sings of the unity of all religions and the oneness of all things. A sufi cannot sing for selfish gain, or exploit their musical talents for their own recognition or praise. In fact the sufi will say that the recognition and praise belongs to the one one who sings through them, that is the life force of creation itself, God's love. Evas reluctance to exploit her gifts according to the whims of market forces is excellent proof of her spiritual stature, and the proof of her mystical union with God is in the remarkable way her music touches peoples inner life so profoundly.
