AUDIO AND VIDEO CLIPS:
People have been asking me where on the Internet they can listen to Eva's music or see video footage of Eva.
(Photo at left: Eva Cassidy singing at a Tower Records in the Washington area to promote the release of LIVE AT BLUES ALLEY)
AUDIO CLIPS:
- BEST BET: Most of the major on-line CD stores have sound clips for a few songs, often in your choice of audio formats. Amazon.com is one of these.
- ALL ON ONE PAGE: Matt in the UK has compiled an excellent page of Eva Cassidy audio clips here. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Matt's use of these clips on his page is fully authorized. His clips are from the albums SONGBIRD, EVA BY HEART, TIME AFTER TIME, IMAGINE, and AMERICAN TUNE, as well as clips from the Eva songs on GOODBYE MANHATTAN and THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS.
- The Washingtonpost.com website has a page about Eva with a downloadable "Wade in the Water" here.
The National Public Radio website has
a special "All Songs Considered" section with holiday songs from a variety of artists, compiled in 2002. One of these is Eva Cassidy singing "It's Not the Presents Under My Tree." The Eva song is the fourth one down, and it can be heard either in RealAudio or Windows Media.
VIDEOS TO PURCHASE :
"EVA CASSIDY SINGS" DVD, NOVEMBER 2004: Available in the United Kingdom, Europe and Australia only, "EVA CASSIDY SINGS" is a DVD with ten song clips from the Blues Alley recording nights. Please note that DVDs formatted for Europe are not playable on most North American DVD/TV equipment due to the incompatibility of the PAL and NTSC formats, in addition to the issue of embedded country codes. I have been told that it will play on DVD-equipped computers, however.
ENHANCED CD SINGLE INCLUDES VIDEO OF 'OVER THE RAINBOW': In the UK, an enhanced limited edition CD single of "You Take My Breath Away" has been issued. The disc features a sound recording of "You Take My Breath Away" and and the same disc will ALSO contain a Quicktime video that can be played on a computer. Note that it is NOT a DVD. The video is the now-famous clip of Eva Cassidy performing "Over the Rainbow" at Blues Alley, videotaped by Eva's friend Bryan McCulley the same night the live album was recorded. His camera was hand-held, making the picture a trifle wobbly, and due to her cold Eva wasn't looking her best, but it's beautiful anyway. One source is Amazon.co.uk.
More about the "enhanced CD single" from Steve in York. "I slipped it into my PC, which already has the player software installed, and away it went, auto running the OTR video footage in a quick time player, though not full screen. Roughly a quarter of my screen area. Very nice, I thought, to have a copy without the TOTP2 captions. As usual it finishes all too soon.... In conclusion I'd say this is a bit of a must for the folks out there who still haven't seen video of Eva performing. With it being a Quick Time file it's pretty universal, there isn't any problem with having the "wrong" TV system or being in the wrong DVD region." Steve also notes that the video has been slightly shortened by removing the instrumental solo in the middle, Eva's guitar solo.

VIDEO CLIPS ON-LINE :
"Where can I see on-line video footage of Eva?" (The sources listed are authorized. I do not list illegal uploads. Please read YouTube's own copyright tips to help you understand.)
Peep Show, anyone? The "Top of the Pops" website offers brief glimpses of the Eva video clips that were shown on TOTP2 in August 2002, via Streaming Web Video (if you don't have RealAudio's free software, you need to download it first). To view them, first go to http://www.bbc.co.uk/totp/videoclips/artist/index_c.shtml , then look for Eva's name.
VIDEOTAPE FROM ABC NIGHTLINE: The ABC "Nightline" profile about Eva can be ordered from ABC on videotape. Harvey writes, "The link to order the tape is HERE. The cost is $29.95 plus shipping." That particular video is from the July 4, 2001, rebroadcast of the Eva Cassidy profile. Others may be available, with slightly differing introductions, though the film itself was unchanged.
By the way, I have moved my various notes about the ABC "Nightline" broadcast, originally on the "What's New" page, here for convenient reference.
WORTH A TRY: I am not sure if this is still available; it was written in January 2004. If you weren't able to see the ABC "Nightline" feature story about Eva Cassidy, Henrik has written a detailed explanation of how to view the "Nightline" profile of Eva on the Internet:
'You can access it through RealOne (the application formerly known as RealPlayer). If you don't already have RealPlayer installed, you can get it from www.realone.com. There is one free version as well as one or more you must pay for. To get access to ABC material you must also sign up for a free 14 day SuperPass. You can do so in RealOne itself, but don't forget to unsuscribe within two weeks or you will be charged $9 every month. Once you have signed up for the RealOne GoldPass trial, in the RealOne application do as follows:
1) From the menu in the top window select View and then Channels.
2) From the list of channels in the bottom window select ABCNews (the first channel on the list)
3) After the ABCNews fanfare is over, click Nightline in the light blue, horizontal menu bar in the top window
4) From the list of Nightline items that now appears select "Life After Death".
It seems the Big Media are so hell-bent on making money they make it almost impossible for people to access what they are trying to sell. Good luck!'
ON-LINE AUDIO FEATURES:
NPR "Morning Edition" broadcast this 9-minute feature story about Eva on December 20, 2000. Elizabeth Blair is the reporter. Well worth hearing (via RealAudio). Or click here to read a transcript.
'AIN'T NO SUNSHINE' ON NPR: Spring 2002: The National Public Radio website has a multimedia on-line magazine called "All Songs Considered" which featured Eva Cassidy in its March 4, 2002 edition. The song is "Ain't No Sunshine." It's a sort of slide show with musical accompaniment.
RADIO FEATURE: BBC Radio 4 'Womans Hour' aired a segment about Eva which seems to have been repackaged for the BBC World Service. The 10 minute audio segment is still available at the following URL : - http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/arts/highlights/010820_cassidy.shtml.
INTERNET FEATURE: Radio Quality UK has an audio report about Eva Cassidy. "An audio appreciation of the unmatchable folk, jazz and blues songbird Eva Cassidy. For five years after her untimely death, some of us loved her. Now everyone does as she gets a number one album in the UK. Find out why.... by Stuart Astill."
WBUR FEATURE: March 26, 2001 : Robin Young of "Here and Now" at WBUR-Boston devoted part of her show to Eva today. You can listen to it via Realaudio here . You'll need to go to the archives to listen to the show -- it's the last ten minutes of the March 26th 2001 program. Robin has long been one of the most devoted "EVA-angelists" and has spread the word most successfully throughout the Boston area.
NOT ON LINE BUT WORTH SEEKING OUT: Several times lately I have noticed CDs of the BBC Radio 2 documentary about Eva Cassidy for sale on eBay. This is an hour-long radio program written by Kevin Howlett and narrated by Terry Wogan. It's marvelous -- it's by far my favorite of all the documentaries about Eva, despite the fact that it is "only" radio and therefore does not have pictures. The program was researched and recorded long before Eva's album SONGBIRD hit the top of the charts in the UK and Ireland, before Eva Cassidy became "big business." It includes interviews with Eva's parents, her manager, and the members of the Eva Cassidy Band, with excerpts from songs such as "The Rose" which will never be on any albums. If you're interested in knowing more, click here to read feedback from listeners who wrote to me when the documentary was originally broadcast on BBC Radio 2. I don't presently see any of these being offered on eBay, but there have been a number of them lately, and I urge you to keep your eye out for it. Wouldn't it be wonderful if this documentary could be broadcast in the United States?
Support the hardworking musicians in your area by attending live performances. Go out to the little clubs and restaurants that offer live music, and if you like what you hear, tell the performers! Clap long and loud! And if they're selling CDs and tapes from their guitar cases, as Eva once did, support their talents and efforts that way too. As someone once wrote in the Guestbook, "There will never be another Eva Cassidy, but there will be someone else."
