THE BEST WEB SITES (DON'T MISS THESE) :
There are now quite a few web sites about Eva, in several languages. Some have a lot of original content to offer and others merely reproduce the information and images available elsewhere. The best are listed here.
EVA CASSIDY ARTWORK SITE: First constructed in 2004, a website is now "up and running" at the long-vacant web address EVACASSIDY.COM. Eva's sister Margret Cassidy Robinson writes, "This website was created by Eva's family to share a few images of Eva's artwork with her many fans." The site features a gallery of Eva's paintings and drawings. Available for purchase are beautiful full-size prints of Eva's artwork, note cards, books, and a wonderful bumper sticker.
Margret Cassidy Robinson has been keeping track of the many countries to which she has been sending "Another Eva Cassidy Fan" bumper stickers. In addition to many regions of the United States, she lists Germany, Canada, England, Belgium, Australia, Denmark, Norway, Ireland, Italy, Holland, Iceland, Mexico, Sweden, Netherlands, Austria, New Zealand, Switzerland, Kenya and Indonesia! Doesn't it make you smile to think of Eva's music uniting music-lovers all over the earth? What a wonderful world!
THE MOST SENIOR OF THE EVA CASSIDY WEB SITES: Mike Schreibman and Maria Villafana at CrosstownArts set up this Eva Cassidy Web Site when LIVE AT BLUES ALLEY first came out, and have helped promote her music in many ways since then. Thank you, Mike and Maria! Of special
interest are photos of Eva and reproductions of some of her artwork. Added in April 2004 are some newly-discovered black-and-white photos taken at WAMA events such as the Wammies and the Crosstown Jam. Many of these were taken by Maria Villafana.
LYRICS AND MUCH MORE: Another excellent new Eva Cassidy website is "EVA SONGS." The URL is evacassidy.dk, the DK standing for Denmark, where the site is based. "Eva Songs" is the Eva lyrics site we've all been waiting for! Henrik in Denmark and Torbjörn in Sweden have transcribed ALL the lyrics from ALL the Eva Cassidy recordings, complete with scholarly notes and links to other relevant websites. This lyrics transcription project was in the works for several years before the transcribers decide to share their lyrics with the rest of the world via the Internet. So often I am asked about lyrics to the songs on Eva's albums, and I have never been entirely satisfied with the Internet lyrics sites because they contain errors, are difficult to navigate, and usually come equipped with annoying pop-up ads. Now, at last, there is a place where Eva's fans can find all the lyrics they are seeking.
GOT A SPARE FEW HOURS? Paul Limbrick in South Wales has created a new Eva Cassidy website entitled EVA CASSIDY, SONG BY SONG. This site has been in development for years, during which Paul has been corresponding by e-mail with many of Eva's former musical colleagues (including some I have never even heard of). In addition to information about the albums, he lists all the songs Eva performed or recorded, and all the bands with which Eva sang. Kudos to Paul for this extensive, well-researched site, which he notes is a work-in-progress. (JULY 2006: This site seems to have vanished. I hope it will return!)
SOUND CLIP SITE: Matt in the UK has created an excellent page of Eva Cassidy sound clips. If you didn't know about this wonderful resource, now's the time to discover it. This is the only place to hear sound clips assembled in one place for your convenience, under license from Blix Street/Hot Records. Thanks, Matt, on behalf of all the Eva fans! The coded links to Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk are the same as mine -- in other words, if you enter Amazon through those links, 5% of your order will be donated to cancer research, at no additional cost to you.
"WHO WAS EVA CASSIDY?" Loe van Haarlem has completely redesigned his Eva website, and it is very beautiful. Collaborating with artist Margaret Haven, with whom Eva worked painting murals during her last summer, Loe has created a stunning photo exhibition of Eva's paint work. The website also explores Eva's connection with the lovely town of Annapolis, Maryland.
EVA MEMORABILIA: Baltimore singer-songwriter Niki Lee has created a multimedia Eva Cassidy section on her own website. Included is a "Real Audio" file with one of Niki Lee's songs for which Eva sang backup vocals as part of an ensemble. Also of great interest, a reproduction of Eva's own setlist from Blues Alley, and a note Eva wrote to Niki the night the album was recorded.
Eva Cassidy Discussion Groups
YAHOO GROUP: The Yahoo Club dedicated to discussing Eva Cassidy has been converted to a "Yahoo Group." (Yahoo decided to make all the clubs into groups.) The URL is http://groups.yahoo.com/group/evacassidy . This group seems to be fairly active, with new messages added every day or two. Non-members can read the discussions but to contribute to them, you have to be a member. It takes just a minute to sign up (click on the "Yahoo Groups" button above). You can read and post messages through e-mail or at the Yahoo Groups website. Unfortunately it has a lot of ads. Be careful when you sign up for any Yahoo Group, to make sure you aren't put onto a lot of mailing lists you don't want.
MORE GROUPS: Three others, currently fairly inactive but possibly waiting for YOU to join to perk things up again, are:
SONGBIRD ("Songbird is a list for the discussion of the music of the late Eva Cassidy, a Washington DC area singer") -- The home page is here. To join, send an e-mail to songbird-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.
also
FRIENDS OF EVA CASSIDY ("This group has been set up for people who just want to talk about Eva Cassidy's music & art. Feel free to join in the conversation!!"). Its home page is here. Instructions on joining can be found on that page.
also
EVAMANIA GROUP: Evamania is "A forum for Eva Cassidy fans especially dedicated to the cause of spreading awareness of and showing appreciation for her music, art, and legacy."
Support the hardworking musicians in your area by attending live performances. Go out to the little clubs and restaurants that offer live music, and if you like what you hear, tell the performers! Clap long and loud! And if they're selling CDs and tapes from their guitar cases, as Eva once did, support their talents and efforts that way too. As someone once wrote in the Guestbook, "There will never be another Eva Cassidy, but there will be someone else."
